Compass to Silence – Where City and Soul Meet
A Mental Well-being Trail in Szentendre
The city pulses: lights, noises, and hurried footsteps weave the dense fabric of everyday life around us. Yet, amidst the rush, we increasingly sense that something within us yearns to breathe at a slower pace than the one dictated by the clock. Beneath the noise lies a subtle, barely audible vibration—our own inner voice—patiently waiting for us to tune back in.
"Compass to Silence" guides us through this very encounter: the blending of the external bustle with our inner stillness. It is not an escape from the world, but a journey where we learn to hear the silence amidst the noise and discover a moment of pause within the rush. It is an intimate, meditative space where our own inner compass gradually comes into focus, and we find our way back home to ourselves—even in the middle of a busy street corner.
Concept and Objectives
As residents and professionals committed to Szentendre, and as founders of the Lélek Liget Foundation, we are planning a unique project that aims to blend our town's cultural and natural assets with modern mental well-being practices.
The atmosphere of Szentendre and many of its locations—such as the Danube riverbank, the promenades along the Bükkös Stream, the streets of Szamárhegy, and other spots—radiate beauty and tranquility. Building upon this foundation, we plan to create an interactive trail titled "Compass to Silence." While educational trails have gained popularity in recent years, we are unaware of any existing trail—either domestically or internationally—that shares this specific concept and set of objectives.
A trail of this nature could play a particularly significant role in formal environmental education. Fostering a connection with the environment involves emotions as well as knowledge; a purely knowledge-based approach is unlikely to influence the deeply rooted values that drive individuals to change their behavior. The ultimate goal of emotion-focused environmental education is to connect young people with nature through interactive experiences. The process of inner transformation fosters the emergence of new cognitive patterns and cultivates a sense of care, respect, and interest in others; a positive state of self anchored in the present moment improves quality of life and alleviates climate anxiety, thereby contributing to the creation of a sustainable future.
Project overview
The trail consists of five aesthetically pleasing stations that blend into the cityscape; rather than imparting factual knowledge, they offer walkers simple exercises designed to cultivate elements of mental well-being—such as mindfulness, gratitude, emotional resilience, and aesthetic appreciation.
This low-budget project—which can be integrated into local education and appeals to both residents and visitors—offers a unique way to enrich the human-scale experience of Szentendre.
The initiative aims to link the "fabric of the city" with emotional well-being, drawing on the tools of mental health and mindfulness. The planned stations address themes such as mindfulness, emotional self-care, social connection, and inner resources, inviting quiet reflection at peaceful, welcoming locations.
The trail is a project of the Lélek Liget Foundation. We hope you enjoy it!

Station Structure
Standard station equipment: an aesthetically pleasing information board, creatively complemented—in a way that suits the specific location—by elements such as wind chimes, a rainstick, etc. We also place a sensory plant tray at every station!
Each board follows a consistent structure
* Opening thought: a short, inspiring quote.
* Psychological background: a brief explanation of the exercise's benefits for mental health.
* Interactive element: a physical or mental exercise to foster presence.
STATIONS
Station 1: Here and Now – Arriving at Yourself
(Location: Bank of the Bükkös Stream, near Apor Bridge)
Exercise: The 5-4-3-2-1 technique: Find 5 different shades of green, observe 4 different sounds, and touch 3 natural surfaces. Identify two different scents, then take a deep breath!
Background: Deep breathing and focusing on the present moment (mindfulness) reduce anxiety and help let go of the need for excessive control.
Station 2: Emotional Weather – Accept What Is
(Location: Szamárhegy, Tanners' Cross)
Exercise: Name your current feeling (using the emotion wheel installation) and accept it without judgment.
Background: Naming our emotions increases self-awareness, aids in emotional self-regulation, and supports the brain's optimal emotional functioning.
Station 3: Inner Source – What Nourishes You?
(Location: The base of the old wild pear tree in the Secret Garden)
Exercise: Find something of simple beauty in your immediate surroundings and immerse yourself in it! Recall three small joys from the past 24 hours and three from the upcoming 24 hours.
Background: Experiencing positive moments—even for just 20–30 seconds—relieves stress and reinforces a positive outlook.
Station 4: Invisible Threads – No One Is an Island
(Location: Park of the Béla Hamvas Pest County Library)
Exercise: Reflect on the people who are dearest to you! If you feel moved to do so, send a kind message to someone who is important to you.
Background: Human connections and micro-interactions are essential for mental health. On a physiological level, they trigger the production of oxytocin, which strengthens both the physical and psychological immune systems.
Station 5: Musical Spot – enjoy the sounds; joy is not a luxury!
(Location: Parti Medve Bookstore)
Activity: Try out the wind chimes and enjoy the sounds!
Background: The experience of playing with sounds rejuvenates the nervous system and fosters creativity.
